8 1/2 Federico Fellini Fellini's great autobiographical masterpiece is an audacious account of a film director during the course of making a film, finding himself trapped by his fears and insecurities. Continually inventive, with the performance of a lifetime from Marcello Mastroianni as Guido, the director. Also starring Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimee, Sandra Milo, and Barbara Steele. "8 1/2 somehow coalesces for me, in many ways, the essence of cinema" (Terry Gilliam). The Criterion Collection edition is letterboxed, 16x9 widescreen; 2-disc set includes 1969 television documentary, Fellini: A Director's Notebook (52 mins.); Nino Rota: Between Cinema and Concert; interviews with Sandra Milo, Lina Wertmuller, and Vittorio Storaro; commentary by critics and scholars; introduction by Terry Gilliam; and much more. Amarcord Federico Fellini A film which breathes freedom - a nostalgic, fantastic and funny reminiscence of growing up in Fellini's home town of Rimini - made, Fellini said, to finish with youth and tenderness. Against the comic background are sets of indelible characters and an omnipresent Fascist state. Amarcord breathlessly shifts between the melodramatic, the intimate and the burlesque in what is a deeply personal, shared vision. The images - a peacock flying through the snow, a child on his way to school who encounters cows that the early-morning fog has transformed into monsters - are like icons; unforgettable. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1974, 127 mins. DVD $59.95
And the Ship Sails On Federico Fellini A cast of typically Fellini-esque characters join on a voyage to scatter the ashes of a famous diva in the ocean. The scenario is ripe for Fellini's great flights of fantasy and also functions as both a criticism of the European aristocracy of old and a nostalgic look back at it. "A tongue-in-cheek ode to a vanished era of beauty and art" (Bruce Williamson, Playboy). With Freddie Jones, Victor Poletti, Peter Cellier, Elisa Mainardi and Paolo Paolini. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1984, 132 mins. DVD $44.95
Boccaccio '70 Federico Fellini/Vittorio De Sica/Luchino Visconti/Mario Monicelli Boasting an unbelievable confluence of talent on both sides of the camera, this omnibus collection features contributions by some of the biggest names in Italian cinema. Each of the directors attempts to tell a story that Boccaccio might write if he was alive in the modern era. The Temptation of Doctor Antonio (Federico Fellini) stars Anita Ekberg in the dreamy, humorous tale of a billboard starlet who springs to life in front of an amorous professor. The Job (Luchino Visconti) stars Romy Schneider as a young office worker in love with her boss (Tomas Milian) in a witty tale about marriage and infidelity. The Raffle (Vittorio De Sica) stars Sophia Loren as a woman who opens up a can of worms when she offers herself up as first prize in a shooting gallery. Finally, Renzo & Luciana (Mario Monicelli), is included for the first time after having been cut for the original release. 2-DVD set. Letterboxed. Includes poster and stills gallery, trailers, archival footage, original U.S. main titles sequence, and collectible booklet with talent bios and a reprint of the rare original U.S. press book. City of Women Federico Fellini Federico Fellini's imaginative voyage into the world of women - or, more accurately, into the world of male fantasies about women, set adrift in the threatening seas of middle-age and feminism. Part apocalyptic joyride, part funhouse, part dream, part vaudeville, City of Women stars Marcello Mastroianni in an outlandish work of fantasy and humor. Italian with enhanced English subtitles. Italy, 1980, 138 mins. DVD $44.95
Fellini Satyricon Federico Fellini Federico Fellini freely adapts the work of Petronius Arbiter in this sexual odyssey through ancient Rome. With an emphasis on spectacle and the grotesque, we follow two young Romans in their pursuit of pleasure and personal survival. With Martin Potter, Hiram Keller, Capucine and Luigi Montefiori as the Minotaur. "Fellini's characteristic delirium is in fact anchored in a precise, psychological schema...it's among his most considerable achievements" (Tony Rayns, Time Out Film Guide). Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1969, 129 mins. DVD $37.95
Fellini's Roma Federico Fellini "A story of a city," to quote Fellini. In Roma, Fellini strings together a series of images of Rome, and through his eyes this special city becomes a living, breathing organism. Roma is quite possibly Fellini's most avowedly autobiographical film to date - a loving document of his own personal encounter with Rome. Starring Fiona Florence, Britta Barnes, Pia de Doses, Marne Maitland and Peter Gonzales as Fellini at 18. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1972, 128 mins. DVD $37.95
I Vitelloni Federico Fellini The young, restless men in a small town on the Adriatic are, each in his own way, discontent. They spend their time pursuing diversion and girls, vaguely dreaming impossible pipe dreams. This brilliant, acid-sharp look at a generation nevertheless reveals Fellini's affection for his characters. The film "is the story of adolescents who cannot see anything more in life than satisfying their animal desires, sleeping, eating, fornication. I was trying to say there is something more, there is always more. Life must have a meaning beyond the animal" (Fellini). The DVD is a Criterion Collection edition, and includes a behind-the-scenes documentary featuring interviews with Leopoldo Trieste, Franco Interlenghi, Moraldo Rossi, and more; a gallery of stills, posters and memorabilia; the original theatrical trailer; a new essay by Tony Piazza; optional English subtitles and more. In Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1953, 104 mins. DVD $44.95
Il Bidone Federico Fellini Three small-time crooks run scams on the poor by disguising themselves as priests, in this film that begins as a comedy and turns tragic. When one of them tries to double-cross the others, they beat him up and leave him to die on a stony hillside. A beautiful tale of salvation found too late, this was the middle chapter in Fellini's "trilogy of solitude," which also includes La Strada and Nights of Cabiria. With Broderick Crawford, Franco Fabrizi, Giulietta Masina and Richard Basehart. English title: The Swindle. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1955, 92 mins. DVD $44.95
Intervista Federico Fellini Fellini's movie combines the film-within-a-film, the essay memoir, a playful recollection of previous works and an eerie conflating of the past and present in this surreal and imaginative distillation of a man's life and work. As Fellini prepares to adapt Kafka's Amerika, his every move and gesture is captured by a Japanese documentary crew. The structure allows Fellini to delve into his past, with visits from Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg and profound remembrances of La Dolce Vita. "An enchanting work, a magical mixture of recollection, parody, memoir, satire, self-examination, and joyous fantasy with Fellini himself as the master of ceremonies" (Vincent Canby, New York Times). The DVD includes an interview with Charlotte Chandler, co-author of I, Fellini, and feature commentary by American Film Institute official Ken Wlaschin. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1987, 109 mins. DVD $44.95
Juliet of the Spirits Federico Fellini "Within a simple, naively romantic narrative frame concerning a wife's desperation over her husband's philanderings, director Federico Fellini has put together an imperial-size fantasy of a physical opulence to make the old Vincente Minnelli musicals look like Army training films," wrote Vincent Canby. Giulietta Masina stars in one of Fellini's best. Newly mastered from a beautiful print. Italian with English subtitles. The DVD is a letterboxed Criterion Collection edition, and includes a theatrical trailer and new and improved English subtitle translation. Italy, 1965, 137 mins. DVD $44.95
La Dolce Vita Federico Fellini "A landmark of cinematic social comment," wrote one critic about Fellini's journey through a decadent Rome. Banned by the Church in many countries, the sensationalism of the film often obscured its serious intent. La Dolce Vita follows a society journalist (Marcello Mastroianni) through a nightmarish world in which emotions have been destroyed by surface realities, moral conventions and unresolved guilt. With Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimee, Alain Cuny and Nadia Gray. The DVD is a Collector's Edition 2 disc set, and is letterboxed, and includes an audio commentary by Richard Schickel, Fellini TV, interviews, a photo gallery, restoration demo, bios, filmographies, a collector's booklet, Spanish subtitles and an English language track. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1961, 174 mins. DVD $54.95
La Strada Federico Fellini Fellini's masterpiece. Giulietta Masina plays Gelsomina, a tragic waif sold to play clown to traveling show strongman Zampano (Anthony Quinn). "Simplicity itself, La Strada is a magical tale and an unbearably painful account of loneliness which will always be associated with the sublimely Chaplinesque Masina...but Quinn, too, is superb, particularly in the final revelation of his own heartbreak and isolation." With Richard Basehart and Aldo Silvani. The DVD is a Criterion Collection edition, and includes a new, high-definition transfer; a video introduction by Martin Scorsese; commentary by author Peter Bondanella; the 2000 documentary, Federico Fellini's Autobiography; an optional English language track with the voices of Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart; the original theatrical trailer; an essay by film scholar Peter Matthews; and more. Nights of Cabiria Federico Fellini The third of Fellini's "trilogy of solitude" (after La Strada and Il Bidone), Nights of Cabiria features Giulietta Masina as an impoverished prostitute living on the outskirts of Rome, who is betrayed by her faith in human nature. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Masina's performance is widely considered one of the great performances in film history. This restored edition includes a seven-minute sequence involving a mysterious charitable donator that was originally censored by the Catholic Church. "To see Giulietta Masina in Nights of Cabiria is to witness the indomitability of life itself" (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times). The DVD is a Criterion Collection edition, and is uncut, restored, and has an interview with Dominique Delouche, restoration demonstration, with English subtitles. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1957, 117 mins. DVD $59.95
Spirits of the Dead Roger Vadim/Louis Malle/Federico Fellini Jane and Peter Fonda, Alain Delon, Brigitte Bardot and Terence Stamp are among the stars cast in this adaptation of three Edgar Allan Poe tales. The three episodes are Metzerngerstein, directed by Roger Vadim; William Wilson, directed by Louis Malle; and Fellini's brilliant Toby Dammit. In the first, the Fonda siblings are involved in a macabre tale built around incestuous desire. The middle work concerns a sadistic fiend (Delon) who, among other things, whips the then-wildly famous Bardot. Finally, Stamp plays a movie star who loses his head and makes a bet with the devil, whom Fellini portrays, in a brilliant master stroke, as a beautiful little girl in a white dress. French with English subtitles. France/Italy 1968 117 mins. DVD $37.95
Variety Lights Federico Fellini/Alberto Lattuada Fellini's first, truly wonderful feature is the story of a group of second-rate theatrical performers on tour. The aging manager of the company falls in love with a newcomer, to the chagrin of his faithful mistress (Giulietta Masina). Though co-directed by Alberto Lattuada, "this is Fellini's film rather than Lattuada's. Already present in his special 'universe': his sense of irony, his baroque qualities, his sympathy for and delight in downtrodden eccentrics, and his portrait of 'bidones' striving comically to find themselves" (Georges Sadoul). Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1950, 97 mins. DVD $44.95
White Sheik Federico Fellini When a provincial couple travel to Rome for their honeymoon, the bride sneaks off to the movie set where her idol, the White Sheik, is making a film. A delightful slapstick comedy worthy of Chaplin ensues in Fellini's first solo directorial effort. "Perhaps the freshest and the most tender and naturalistic of Fellini's films" (Pauline Kael). The DVD is a Criterion Collection edition, and features optional English subtitles, interviews with actors Brunella Bovo, Leopoldo Trieste and Fellini friend Moraldo Rossi, an essay by critic Jonathan Rosenbaum and more. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1952, 86 mins. DVD $44.95
