Burmese (Myanmar): An Introduction to the Language (Northern Illinois University)
John Okell
This four-part course was originally designed for classroom use but has proven to be highly effective for individual self-study as well. Unlike most book-and-tape sets with their grammar rules and vocabulary lists, this course specifically targets the student's acquisition of useful functional spoken language skills, rather than just teaching about the language. There are four parallel volumes in this series of Burmese language texts: Burmese: An Introduction to the Spoken Language: Book 1 and Book 2, Burmese: An Introduction to the Script, and Burmese: An Introduction to the Literary Style. These volumes can be purchased individually or as a package.

Staff Review:
"As one highly skeptical of the effectiveness of the text-and-tapes method of self-instruction in languages, I am highly impressed by the course that Professor Okell has put together. Whereas the majority of language courses deliver a more or less complete description of the language -- its grammar, vocabulary, and writing system Okell's Burmese course expressly concerns itself with enabling the student to speak the language interactively with native speakers: i.e., it actually teaches the language rather than simply teaching about the language. Given the scarcity of materials of such quality, and especially given the scarcity of materials for the Burmese language, I am doubly excited to feature this product."

Burmese: An Introduction to the Spoken Language, Book 1
Burmese: An Introduction to the Spoken Language, Book 2
John Okell
These two volumes focus on early encounters with Burmese speakers and cover survival needs and first conversations. They give a solid grounding in the grammar and sound system of modern colloquial Burmese, with short lessons that enable flexible pacing and extensive practice. There are many speaking exercises and practice dialogues on the tapes, with review lessons at frequent intervals. The Burmese material is presented in both Burmese script and roman transcription throughout. Included also are notes on etiquette and social behavior in Myanmar, cumulated vocabularies in both Burmese-English and English-Burmese and additional vocabularies arranged by topic, e.g. names of clothes, foods, conversing with Buddhist monks, etc.

Burmese: An Introduction to the Script
John Okell
This book and tape set enables students with no previous knowledge of Burmese to become competent in reading and writing Burmese script. In particular, it offers the use of tapes to make the link between the symbols you read and the words you hear and say, with readings from original Burmese materials and appendices on handwriting and cursive forms, ornate lettering, the Burmese names of the characters, Burmese alphabetical order, and common abbreviations.

Burmese: An Introduction to the Literary Style
John Okell

Parts 1 and 2 contain passages relating to life at home and at school, while the texts selected for Part 3 deal with themes of Burmese nationalism and independence. EuroTalk Network Editions
Now you can run Vocabulary Builder, Talk Now!, World Talk, and Movie Talk through your school or college CD server or CD tower for simultaneous use of these titles on your network! You'll have access to permanent reports for all the activities done by each student in the class for such things as time and sessions spent on each activity, scores in the quizzes and games. These network discs operate on most networks that are in common use in schools and colleges, such as NT, Novell, and Macintosh networks. Students can select their names from classes, and run the program currently assigned to that class, and students may optionally also be allowed to join classes. Teachers can see at a glance which students are currently logged on and what they are doing, and they can add students to classes, remove them, or move them around. A reports facility allows you to display or print reports for entire classes, or for individual students. Student reports show the number of sessions, the time spent on each activity, and scores in the quizzes and games, and times and scores can also be displayed in chart form. The prices are highly competitive, and the price per unit goes down dramatically as one goes up in the number of users and units. With a configuration of 100 users and 100 units, which goes for $9,995, you pay less than $1 per unit per person!
