Course Sections The Hindi Tutor CD-ROM course is divided into seven sections. 1. Basics The student is expected to observe carefully, and is introduced to the Hindi sounds and alphabet. They listen to the basic sounds, hear how the language is spoken, and have a look at how the words are written and the simpler methods of writing. There are 20 lessons included in this section. 2. Writing Skills Introduction to the alphabet, with student learning to read, write and pronounce the characters - this contains 7 lessons in all. A unique writing facility provided here, where one can practice the writing with the mouse on the board in red, blue, green or black. 3. Lessons Helps the student to learn and speak words - lots of vocabulary, speech practice, common usages, glossary etc. are included in this section, all in an interactive animated context. Tests are also provided in order for the students to evaluate themselves. 4. Numbers Contains 15 lessons. The student learn the numbers and how to write, read and speak them.

5. Riddles, Idioms and Proverbs This section has been included mainly to increase the level of interaction of children with their parents. The method adopted here is such that the student, if a child, will start communicating with their parents to know more about the proverbs and riddles. This also gives the parent ample opportunity to interact with their child, teach them the significance of the proverbs and how it is relevant to their life. It also helps students to expand their vocabulary. 6. Stories Gives the student a simulation of reading Hindi storybooks. Listen to and see the story, while enjoying the entertaining graphics. Notes on Hindi Hindi is the national language of India. More than 180 million people in India speak Hindi as their mother tongue, and another 300 million use it as second language - and there are also millions of Hindi speakers outside India. Hindi is a direct descendant of Sanskrit, although the word 'Hindi' is actually of Persian origin and it means 'Indian'. Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, said to be the most scientific writing system of all those in the world. The Devanagari script is written from left to right, and descended from the Brahmi script, which was well established in India before 500 B.C. The script is phonetic in nature and there is a uniform correspondence between the letters and their pronunciation. The literary history of Hindi goes back to the twelfth century - some notable literary figures of Hindi are Kabir, Surdas, and Tulsidas. It also has a rich grammatical tradition of its own. The first Hindi newspaper 'Udant Martanda' was published in 1826 from Calcutta. At the same time, authors like Raja Shivprasad Sitare Hind and Raja Lakshman Singh had established new trends in Hindi literature. Later on, Hindi became the national symbol in India's fight against the British colonial rule. Many Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, revolutionaries, poets and reformists resorted to Hindi to propagate their ideology. After India won the independence, the new constitution, which was adopted on January 26, 1950, granted to Hindi the status of the Official Language of the Republic of India. Today Hindi is world's third most spoken language and is spreading all over the world.
